Judges Quote

“A very strong class of flavoursome wines across a couple of vintages with some green tannins showing
in the 07 wines and ripe fruit in the 06's. The judges commented that you could sit down to dinner with
any one of these and be perfectly happy. ”

The Fugue - shiraz pinot fusion Review

Wonga Estate
The Fugue
4½ Stars
The nose has an abundance of berry fruit aromas with an interesting lavender like lift. Flavoursome palate has length, weight, balance complexity and plenty of varietal fruit.

2005 Pinot Noir Promotion

The best dish complementing the Wonga Estate 2005 Pinot Noir
Chill on Tedder’s promotional dish, Crispy Duck Leg Confit, braised red cabbage, truffle scented mash, buttered baby spinach, confit duck and sweet potato boudin, white raisin jus, is of first class.
The initiative, enthusiasm and attention to detail is certainly shown in this dish. The duck was crispy as stated, and accompanied with the truffle mash, red cabbage and white raisin jus.
I believe was a perfect marriage to the Wonga Estate 2005 Pinot Noir.
This dish brought out some lovely plum and cherry characters in the pinot noir with a long savoury finish at the end. Read more...>

Judges Quote
“We may have scared off a few people with this grandiose title, thereby losing a few that may have entered our usual shiraz tasting. However, we still managed over 400 wines, which is nothing to sneeze at.
What is exciting about this tasting is the calibre of the entrants who did put their reputations on the line, and in particular our icon category which displays many of the world’s greatest shiraz wines in a head-to-head
blind competition.”

Review - Heathcote Shiraz 2004 - Rated: 92 Points

I liked the 2003 version of this wine, so opened this with high expectations. A pleasing colour – a vibrant red with splashes of purple. The nose is full-on, with black fruits, spice, milk chocolate, vanilla and earth, cinnamon, and a bit of volatile acidity. It just smelled like a big wine, and the palate didn’t let the nose down at all. It is intensely fruited, almost painfully so, with buckets of plump red cherries and red plums, sweet and juicy, and quite a bit of vanillan oak too. The finish is on the sweeter side of things, and the length is excellent. Another outstanding effort, but I think it needs a couple of years to soften, so you should be patient, yes, you know you can do it. Review Winorama - Lincoln Scott, 2006

I have just had a look at this wine and I reckon it is worth some attention, and a note.
A lovely nose: old red leather, mixed spices, supple, blood plums, nice spicy oak (understated), a touch of caramel and a bit of acetone. The palate is very soft and mellow, medium bodied with silky tannins, red plums, black cherries and cassis. Balanced, with some vibrant acid on the finish. Doesn’t look like Heathcote to me; looks more like an older Barossa. Regardless, a very nice wine, and the 2004 is out soon, maybe even now, so if this is any indication it should be worth a look too

Review - Chardonnay 05 - Rated 91/100
www.winestar.com.au
The style of presentation is the first distinguishing feature from this Yarra Valley maker. The wine label appears handwritten in a nicely casual style. Greg Roberts is the winemaker ably supported by Serge Carlei. The Halliday annual notes the current production of 650 cases.

According to the winery website the chardonnay fruit is estate grown and is from low yielding (1.5 tonnes to the acre) non irrigated vines and matured in new and one year old French oak barriques for 12 months. The alcohol is 13% and the wine is bottled with the cork flour/synthetic hybrid Diam seal.
Medium straw colour. Stonefruit and melon chardonnay characters evident on the nose. The oak is indicated but not intrusive. The palate is medium weight with some buttery (malo?) notes. A lemony element comes in on the palate which also provide addtional character. The flavours build across the palate giving nice breadth before a good long finish. A very nicely structured cool climate Chardonnay that is nicely enjoyable now and will also support medium term cellaring. Review WineStar - Murray Almond, November, 2006

Rating 5 STARS James Halliday
Ten Best
New Wineries
Recently released, James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2006 (Australia's best selling guide to Australian wines) reviewed Wonga Estate.
The winery rated 5 stars in the "Ten Best New Wineries"
in Australia.

James Halliday,
Australian Wine Companion

"Best Wineries of the Region"
"As I have already observed, I made four sequential attempts to come up with winery ratings. For obvious reasons, deciding on the 5-star wineries awards is difficult. On the other hand, I didn't want to altogether ignore prior 5-star winners, I wanted the ratings to reflect the wines tasted for this edition. Some of the inclusions will surprise. These ratings are for this year, not for life. For the record, only 8.5% of the wineries in this edition receive 5-stars".
